Stress & Weight Gain

WHICH OF THESE DESCRIBES YOU BETTER;

  1. I’m healthy. I eat well. I get enough sleep. I exercise daily. I prioritize joy. I take conscious deep breaths regularly. I take time for myself. I feel inner peace.
  2. I’m stressed out. I’m overwhelmed. I’m so busy. I have anxiety. I have depression. I have trouble focusing. I crave sugar. I don’t sleep well.

If you chose #1, amazing, keep up the great work! If you chose #2, you are not alone.

Modern society seems to be conspiring in creating mental-emotional stress. A primary way our body deals with stress is to store fat. It is time to recognize that chronic stress will, at some point, demand your attention, in this case, via weight gain.

MENTAL-EMOTIONAL STRESS…

Time pressure. Family drama. Work demands. Money. Kids. House or car trouble. Health concerns. In-laws. HR. Hardly enough time to shop let alone prepare healthy nourishing meals. Countless upsetting social/political/economic issues of the world creeping onto your favorite method of information consumption (maybe you should put that down!). Possibly worst of all, a lack of self-love, resulting in lack of self-care.

Stress can play out in many ways, but in my clinical experience, it most often results in self-medicating with sugar, & issues with sleep. Consuming excess sugar &/or poor sleep can lead to obesity (via dysregulation of the hormones that control hunger), diabetes, and other major health problems such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Finding ways to properly manage stress cultivates fertile ground for improving the choices we make for ourselves, and consequently cultivates overall well-being (emotionally & spiritually), which leads to optimal physical health as well.

Stress is a part of life. To some degree it is healthy and motivates us to grow or accomplish difficult things. Many of life’s stressors cannot be avoided, that is why managing stress is more about adding good vs. getting rid of bad. In other words, the quest for reducing stress begins with 2 simple prescriptions; JOY & REST. If something (healthy) brings a smile to your face, do more of that. When you are tired, give yourself permission to rest. It really is that simple.
